Saturday Scene: Maple Syrup

On Saturday, we met some friends at a maple tapping demonstration at a local garden. We learned that it takes approximately 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. The maples that grow in our area produce sap that is about 3% sugar. The kids attending the demonstration got to help drill a hole in the tree to insert the spile.

Then they got to taste the sap right out of the tree. I didn't taste it, but the boys said it tasted like water with a little sugar in it.

We then went to see how they boil the sap and strain it to remove any dirt, debris, insects and minerals, and the boys got to taste the syrup on our way out.

We stopped back in the nature center, and a staff member got out the resident salamander for the kids to see and pet.

We're planning to go back to the garden next month for a pancake breakfast using maple syrup produced there. I'm sure it'll be delicious!
