Here are our two future farmers of America:
Last week, Zach and Evan got to ride a combine and big farm tractor for the first time, thanks to a friend whose family farms in our area. Evan as a little hesitant to climb up on the combine, but he ended up enjoying the ride. Zach climbed right up when it was his turn on the combine.
On the drive home, Zach told Craig he wants to be a farmer...or a bus driver. Not sure how bus driver got thrown in there. I asked our friend if he could get Zach a job at the farm when he's old enough, since there's a whole lot of hard work -- not just driving big, fancy machines -- that goes into farming. Both boys have asked to "go cut corn" several times.
There was a terribly unfortunate mishap on the ride: the combine hit a deer that was in the corn. This had never happened to our friend or his brother before, and they've farmed their entire lives. Craig was riding in the combine at the time, and thankfully shielded Evan from most of it. Zach was riding in the other tractor with our friends, and they were far enough away that they couldn't see everything that was going on. Our friend told the boys it was a log, but Zach told me "it looked like the log had antlers." We were concerned about how much they'd seen, and how traumatized they'd be, but so far, no nightmares or anything. Thank goodness Craig was there and not me. I'm sure he was much calmer than I would have been, which would have traumatized the kids.
With the exception of the accident, it was a fun and educational evening.
